lo-fi and plastic camera workshop

I’m teaching another toy camera workshop this Saturday (May 5) at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.  A digital artist friend signed up for the workshop because she was frustrated with her Diana F+.  I’ve been practicing with the Diana, and I’m happy with some of the results.  First I had to remember to take off the lens cap!

'garden' (pinhole image, paper negative) 2012

For worldwide pinhole photography day, I made a pinhole in brass foil and mounted it on a jewelry box.  The edges are pretty rough.

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day 2012

Sunday, April 29th, is Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, an international event created to celebrate the art of pinhole photography.  On the last Sunday of April, consider participating in the simple act of making a pinhole photograph.  The event culminates in an online exhibit of the lensless photographs made internationally on the WPPD website.

I’m excited to have the opportunity to join the instructors of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center for a pinhole photography workshop in Denver, Colorado.  We are one of only 33 participants in the United States for WPPD… Represent!

“A Closer Look: Richard Dienbenkorn’s ‘Spreading Spade’”

“A work of art often uses complex methods to create simple results,  working hard to create something that appears effortless… decorative and yet enigmatic.”

‘Meditations’ on the Hand of Buddha

'Meditations on the Hand of Buddha' (photopolymer intaglio, 5' x 6', 2011)

I came across a 25 foot statue of the seated Buddha, Phra Achana, in Wat Si Chum while visiting the UNESCO World Heritage historical park Sukhothai, Thailand.  His right hand, in the ‘earth witness’ mudra, stood as tall as myself  and was covered with gold leaf applied by devotees.  I photographed it in color film with my Holga and printed it with a four color process on the etching press.  There are 24 different color variations possible when the inks and plates of the four color process are switched.  I added one more by excluding cyan to make a 5×5 piece that measures 5′ x 6′.
